REMOVING BARRIERS TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING
The Removing Barriers to Affordable Housing Development Subcommittee (RBSC) has been assigned the task of suggesting ways to improve the Unified Development Code and other city processes. Their primary goal is to make it easier for developers to build more affordable housing in San Antonio. By proposing changes and enhancements, they aim to facilitate the construction of homes that are within the financial reach of a broader range of people in the city.
disABILITYsa plays a crucial role in planning discussions by advocating for the needs of people with disabilities. We bring attention to the scarcity of accessible homes and emphasize that retrofitting a home for accessibility after it's built often leads to unaffordable housing options.

INFLUENCING THE FUTURE OF DESIGN
disABILITYsa has partnered with Neda Norouzi, an assistant professor in the UTSA School of Architecture and Planning, and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Center for Architects at San Antonio in the classroom. Working together, each course encourages students to practice evidence-based design and gives them experience using architecture as a tool to apply in real word settings. Students are also gaining lessons in compassion, empathy and the impact design can have on people.

- Fall 2021: Designing Homes for People with Disabilities
At the beginning of the fall 2021 semester, students were randomly assigned to five different scenarios that included a family situation and their living space. These scenarios included a single father with his young son who is blind, a family of three with a mom who is deaf, a young couple with a husband who uses an electrical wheelchair, a couple with a teen daughter with autism, and a young family of four who want to age in place. The students were tasked with researching how to accommodate each situation and also asked to consider the results of a disABILITYsa survey that showed some of the challenges the pandemic presented.
