Get Fit Texas is a free health and wellness program for adults with developmental disabilities offered by the Epilepsy Foundation of Central and South Texas. Participants receive a free pre-program health screen, individualed fitness plan, private coaching from a certified fitness coach and much more! Alamo KidSports now offers adaptive sports programs for children between 4 and 10 years old, with physical or developmental disabilities. The classes are in a group setting, with two coaches overseeing the class with volunteers and parents assisting with the games. All classes are held at their indoor facility, The Training Ground. Does Someone Rely on YOU for Care? Find out how you can get free family caregiver coaching and training on the topics that matter most to you. Join instructor Thelma Bowen, RN, MSN for hands-on training that will help you cope with the challenges of providing 24-hour care to a loved one. Talking Books Serve Texans with Visual and Physical Disabilities Are you having trouble reading standard size print? Do you have macular degeneration or know someone who does? Have you or someone you know suffered a stroke or have some other physical disability? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you or someone you know may qualify for the Texas Talking Book Program. The program is a free library service for any age Texan who has a visual or physical disability--whether temporary or permanent--that keeps them from reading regular size print. A new program has been launched by Air Force officials for parents with special-needs children. The program allows parents to receive 8-20 hours of respite care per month at no charge as long as they meet eligibility requirements. The child must be enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program. To apply for the respite care program, contact Child Care Aware at 800-424-2246. Visit the National Resource Directory for more resources for parents of children with disabilities as well as organizations that offer respite care for caregivers.
