Community Advancement in Healthcare
disABILITYsa is currently engaged in the following activities to help advance the considerations of people with disabilities in the area of healthcare:
Disability-friendly Healthcare Provider Training
DisabilitySTRONG is a multifaceted information, education, and community campaign to open conversations about questions and barriers around vaccinations and provide information and resources on health safety, benefits, and access for the disability community.
disABILITYsa invites healthcare professionals to join us in breaking down the barriers that may inhibit individuals living with various disabilities from seeking healthcare services from local providers. Through our DisabilitySTRONG Provider Workshop, participants can increase their knowledge on how to easily make a healthcare environment more disability-friendly.
One in every seven people in San Antonio lives with a disability. This disABILITYsa Disability-friendly Provider Workshop will take Pharmacists, Physicians, and Clinicians through a 3.5-hour meaningful learning experience outlining the types of disabilities and associated access issues, participating in problem-finding exercises, exploring the clinical perspective, and an overview of various strategies, tools, and resources for creating more disability-friendly environments.

Community Alliance for Results in Equity (CARE)
disABILITYsa is part of the Community Alliance for Results in Equity (CARE) Core Working Group with Metro Health’s Access to Care Office
The Access to Care (A2C) Office was developed in 2021 to address systemic barriers to patient-centered health care. The A2C team focuses on partnerships and policies that promote timely use of personal health services, and by extension, the achievement of better health outcomes. Because A2C is a new office, we were able to determine our own focus areas. Given the immense disparities that Black and Brown populations face with maternal and mental health, the decision was easy.
One way we are working to address these disparities is through the Community Alliance for Results in Equity (CARE). The CARE initiative will address systemic barriers to care by annually showcasing clinics that create a respectful, welcoming patient experience for all. Recognition will be awarded to offices and institutions prioritizing equity and access in their practices, as determined by a coalition of community members, researchers, providers, and local organizations who are dedicated to making a difference – aka the Core Working Group.
Core Working Group responsibilities include:
