VSA Texas presents the 2012 MIAW Art Show, an exhibition celebrating Mental Illness Awareness Week in October at High Wire Art Gallery, located at 326 West Josephine, San Antonio, TX 78212. The exhibit includes artwork by almost 20 artists with mental illness from the San Antonio area. The exhibition runs from October 12 – November 2, 2012 with an Opening Reception on Friday, October 12, 6:30-9:00 PM. The event benefits Pressing On, a local non-profit organization, which provides one-on-one exercise-based training and a FREE OPEN GYM, for those with Spinal Cord Injuries,MS,Stroke,Amputees and other physical disabilities. This event is set to be one of the organization’s key annual fundraising events. Your support helps provide health,wellness and independence for people with physical disabilities all year long. In observance of November as National Family Caregiver Month, San Antonio area family caregivers are invited to be guests at a free special Seminar and Luncheon from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 3. Featuring fun, food and presentations by experts, the Third Annual Caregivers Seminar and Luncheon will be held in the Tri-Point Grantham Center, Hwy. 281 and St. Mary's St. in San Antonio.
Caregivers can visit exhibitors, learn about resources and supports available to them in our community, receive hand and chair massages, along with dining together and sharing experiences with other caregivers.
The event is sponsored by the Bexar County Family Caregiver Support Coalition. The Coalition is comprised of non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, and service providers for caregivers of seniors, children and adults with a disability, and wounded warriors.
Free Respite care is available on-site with prior reservations. The deadline is 5 p.m., Monday, October 29th to register for the Seminar/Luncheon and to request *on-site Respite services. Keynote Luncheon headliner is Dondi Scumachi, motivational speaker and author, addressing "Thriving in the Midst of Change."; followed by Lynn Edelson, of Wimberley, known for her "Laughter Yoga" presentation. Other topics include: Identity Theft, Battle Mind vs. Civilian Mind, Guardianship vs. Power of Attorney, A Pediatric Focus on Managing Challenging Behaviors, and Spirituality and the Caregiver Role. An afternoon panel will address Community Resources available to Caregivers (with representatives from various local, county, city, and regional agencies and organizations), with the closing topic covering Respite Care.
